When customers land on your product page, you only have a few seconds to grab their attention. That’s why we’ve introduced a brand new Short Description field for product listings on Made By Mums.

This new one-line summary appears right at the top of your product page, alongside important information like price and availability. It’s designed to give shoppers an immediate reason to keep reading, especially when browsing quickly on mobile devices.

Product listing with short description added

Rather than simply repeating your product title, this is your opportunity to instantly communicate why your item is special.

Why Short Descriptions Matter

Online shoppers tend to scan before they read properly. A strong short description can help a customer immediately understand:

  • What your product is
  • What makes it different
  • Why they might love it
  • What feeling or benefit it offers

Think of it as your product’s “hook”.

A good short description can help create curiosity, build emotional connection and encourage customers to explore the rest of your listing in more detail.

Focus on the Benefit, Not Just the Product

One of the biggest mistakes we see sellers making here is simply repeating the product name in a slightly different way. Instead, try focusing on the outcome, feeling, or benefit your product provides.

Take for example a short description “Handmade Floral Lampshade”. This tells customers what it is, but not why they should care. A stronger version might be: “Make a statement with this beautifully handcrafted floral lampshade”.

Now the customer instantly starts imagining the product in their home. It creates a feeling, highlights craftsmanship, and gives the product more personality.

What Makes a Good Short Description?

The best short descriptions are:

Benefit-led

Lead with what the customer gains or experiences. Examples:

  • “Add warmth and charm to your nursery…”
  • “Perfect for cosy autumn evenings…”
  • “Create a thoughtful keepsake they’ll treasure…”

Clear and easy to understand

Customers should immediately know what the product actually is.

Focus on a key selling point

Highlight something distinctive. For example, you might use “Handmade”, “Personalised”, “Eco-friendly”, “Unique materials”, “One-of-a-kind design” or “Locally crafted”.

Short and easy to scan

Especially on mobile devices, shorter works better. Aim for one concise sentence rather than a paragraph.

Different from the product title

Use the space to add value, not duplication.

A Great Real Example

We recently spotted a brilliant example from Lillian’s Lamphats. Their short description quickly introduced the product, highlighted the handcrafted nature of the item, and created intrigue, all in a simple sentence.

“Make a bold statement with this handcrafted zebra print lampshade”. Check it out in the screenshot above.

That balance is exactly what makes this feature so useful.

Where to Find the New Field

You’ll now find the Short Description field inside the Name & Description section when adding or editing a product.

It appears just below the main product description field.

Short description as it displays in your seller dashboard

The feature is now available for all existing products, as well as new listings, so it’s worth reviewing some of your current listings and adding short descriptions where appropriate.

Even small improvements to how your products are presented can make a real difference over time.

A Quick Exercise to Try

Before writing your short description, ask yourself: What makes this special, and why would someone love it?

That simple question usually leads to much stronger copy.
